According to the German “le monde” report, the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said that the International Olympic Committee will increase the spending of hundreds of millions of dollars for the extension of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Xinhua News Agency, Berlin, April 13, according to the German “World News” report, the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said that the International Olympic Committee would add hundreds of millions of dollars to the extension of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Bach said that at present, “it is impossible to accurately explain” how much more the one-year extension will increase Tokyo’s already high preparatory costs, but the IOC will follow the financial sharing plan discussed with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe before the extension of the announcement in March.
“We have reached an agreement with Prime Minister Abe that Japan will continue to bear the expenses it should bear according to the existing agreement for 2020, and the International Olympic Committee will also bear the expenses it should share.” Bach said in an interview with Le Monde, “for the International Olympic Committee, it is obvious that it will increase the expenditure by hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“The IOC insured for the cancellation of the Olympic Games, but did not insure for the extension of the Olympic Games.” Bach said, “the extension needs to be approved by the Organizing Committee. The organizing committee needs to prepare for the extension. The Japanese government must also be willing to support the preparatory work.”
It is estimated that the extra expenditure brought by the delay of Tokyo Olympic Games will reach 300 billion yen (about 2.7 billion dollars).
Tokyo Olympic Games is expected to open on July 23, 2021.
