Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, January 15th the Executive Committee of the International Table Tennis Federation recently held a meeting in Delhi, India, and decided to use video playback technology in the Tokyo Olympic Games and major International Table Tennis Federation events.
In 2019, the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Finals introduced video playback technology for the first time and received positive feedback from the players. In the game, players can reconfirm the referee’s penalty by presenting a challenge replay. Based on this, the ITTF Executive Committee decided to continue to use video playback technology in 2020 major events and Tokyo Olympics. ITTF said it would continuously improve its technical level in order to achieve the best results, including shortening the time between video playback and final decision.
Steve Denton, CEO of ITTF, said that video playback technology is widely used in other sports projects. We know that this technology can ensure a fair competition environment for all athletes, to some extent, giving athletes the opportunity to challenge the referee to judge the penalty can be said to be the innovation of table tennis.
The meeting also made five other decisions including allowing multiple cities to jointly host the Future World Table Tennis Championships.
